New Signage and Graphics Help Transform World-Famous Hollywood Bowl

Comprehensive update of the signage throughout the park results in improved wayfinding for pedestrians

July 12, 2006 —A new signage program and comprehensive wayfinding system created by Pasadena-based Hunt Design, a leading graphic designer for buildings, spaces and places, was recently unveiled at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Teaming with a powerful group of designers and architects on the project, Hunt Design led the comprehensive update of all signage in and around the venue to transform the system in the Moderne style. The dramatic electronic marquee at the park’s entrance, originally designed by Hunt, is also being rebuilt in a Moderne style that matches the structures inside the park, creating an overall visual identity that extends throughout the venue.

“Our goal was to create a seamless guest experience by creating a visual language consistent with the site’s streamline Moderne architecture,” said Wayne Hunt, founding principal of Hunt Design, adding, “From the Highland Avenue entrance to its vast array of seating, the Bowl’s new signage program will now speak in a more unified, singular voice.”

Hunt has a long history of working with preeminent visitor-based attractions throughout Los Angeles. The firm’s tenure with the Hollywood Bowl stretches back years, and includes the original design of the Highland Avenue monument sign, a logo for the Hollywood Bowl and an exhibit for the Hollywood Bowl Museum entitled, Driving to the Bowl. The firm has also created environmental graphics design solutions for such famed destinations as Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, Exposition Park, Olvera Street, Downtown Los Angeles Walks, the Los Angeles Zoo, Universal Studios and the Los Angeles Metro Rail System.

“For the first time since the Bowl’s creation, a consistent aesthetic has been applied to all facets of the park’s signage — one that is thoroughly contemporary while being respectful of the Bowl’s rich architectural history,” says Hollywood Bowl General Manager Arvind Manocha.

Hunt Design’s work on the Hollywood Bowl improvements project spanned analysis and programming, concept design, design drawings and construction administration. The overall scope and aesthetic of Hunt’s work on the project — including revisions to the main marquee, new vehicular and pedestrian signage guidelines, new maps and directories, new amphitheater “Gateways,” new menu boards — will be implemented on more than 640 signs throughout the venue. The system’s brushed stainless steel letters with halo illumination and black, white and gray panel signs all pay tribute to the moderne style.

“The improved wayfinding program for pedestrians will not only create a cohesive aesthetic throughout the park, it will allow visitors an enriched experience,” added Jennifer Bressler, principal and project director at Hunt Design.
