After two-plus years of planning, design, approvals and construction, the Hunt-designed Hollywood
wayfinding project is complete. From the Hollywood Bowl to Sunset and Vine, the 78-sign project includes vehicular, pedestrian and identity elements to unite the many eclectic Hollywood destinations. In a departure from many civic wayfinding programs, branded vehicular signs direct drivers solely to parking lots and structures, not to individual destinations. From there thematic pedestrian-scale signs and map kiosks direct walkers to over one hundred points of interest in this historic Los Angeles district. “The design and program review and approval process was one our most daunting to date.” says firm Founding Principal Wayne Hunt. In addition to the two Hollywood business improvement districts (the direct clients), the unique project required approvals from Caltrans, Metro, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Hollywood Walk of Fame and others. “Designing something for the streets of Hollywood was both a real pleasure and a real challenge,” added Kevin Taylor, the project’s creative lead, “Hollywood is a very special place and it was important to reflect a real Hollywood feel.”
