Signage and graphics play an ever-increasing role in todayʼs competitive, multifaceted residential environments. Placemaking is not just about wayfinding signage, but also image, color and brand. The national trend toward urban living is clearly on the rise. Many of these rental and for-sale properties are being built in complex environments, exemplified by dynamic, exciting architecture. Downtowns and cities, with their close proximity to transportation and amenities, are quickly becoming the place to live. These usually dense, often vertical developments require well-designed signage and graphics to ensure the optimum experience for residents and visitors alike.
But unlike an urban commercial or entertainment destination, apartments and condominiums welcome the same visitors day after day — the residents. While wayfinding is important, signage design is often more subdued and must be thoughtfully woven into the buildingʼs design. Signage must also take into account a wide variety of operational imperatives and civic code-based elements.
Residential signage can also be a big part of brand expression. Expressive colors and decorative wall graphics are just as important in building the image, place and space — and contribute to its success.
Additionally, these new residential units are being built as large, multi-building complexes, increasing the need for thoughtful wayfinding to ensure the visitor experience.
Hunt Designʼs substantial experience spreads throughout all aspects of residential environment wayfinding program design — the technical issues of sign planning, design, facility interface and documentation. The firm is known for its ability to discover and exploit the often-invisible spatial logic in environments, and calls this part of the design process Wayfinding Strategy. The team goes beyond form, color, font and physical design to create communication interventions that often include names, nomenclature, numbering systems and non-signage tools that connect visitor needs with challenging environments.
