A team from Hunt Design was recently on the ground at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island assisting the National Park Service with a rush wayfinding sign plan to help get America’s most famous icons open to the public. The two beloved and historic destinations have been unable to receive visitors since last October’s Hurricane Sandy destroyed or damaged docks, ticketing facilities, footpaths and other critical infrastructure. “Virtually all wayfinding and visitor signage was destroyed, and at Ellis Island, all the building infrastructure was wiped out.” We’re starting from scratch.” says Hunt Principal Jennifer Bressler. Hunt Design and other park service consultants, vendors and park staff are working all-out to reopen the Statue of Liberty for the July 4th holiday. Hunt Design was nearing the end of a two-year planning process for all-new signage at the two monuments and twenty other National Park sites in the New York area when the hurricane hit. Next, the Hunt team will focus a similar intense effort on the hard-hit Gateway National Recreation Area, with new wayfinding for ten National Park sites in Staten Island, Jamaica Bay, and Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
